This two-phase project will replace the 85-year-old copper roof of the Library of Congress' John Adams Building.

The Adams Building roof is nearing the end of its viable life cycle. Phase 1 of the project, currently underway, replaces the lower roof tier. Phase 2 will replace the middle and upper roof tier.

Work entails removing the existing copper roof, installing a new roof made of copper batten seams and liquid applied reinforced polymer roof membrane. The project will also install up-to-date and up-to-code fall prevention systems around the roof to ensure worker safety, and install a new lightning protection system.

A construction compound has been constructed on the southeast lawn of the Adams Building. There will be some noise during working hours (7 a.m.–3 p.m.). Pedestrians in the area will see typical signs of construction.

Phase 1 of the project is estimated to be complete early 2025.
